Near the entrance to many public buildings is a bucket of water with a spout and basin. The embassy is the first place I saw this. I noticed it the first day we arrived in Liberia. They have one at each entrance. I thought this was drinking water for the employees and guests who come in from the heat, but I was wrong. These water stations are leftover from efforts to contain the spread of Ebola. The typical water station only has water to rinse hands before entering a building. Now with coronavirus as a common topic of conversation, these buckets of water are popping up around the city. This one is at the entrance to a popular expat hotel. All doors except one were blocked off and an employee stood there to make sure everyone at least got their fingertips wet before entering.</div>

Pangolins are this unique little creature that happen to be the most trafficked animal in the world. Why? Chinese medicine. The Chinese believe their scales, which are simply made of keratin, (the same as our fingernails) have medicinal benefits. Pangolins are relatively easy to catch because they don't have any defense mechanisms except to curl up in a little ball. Sounds like a good plan to me, but it's not very effective when you can just pick up the little ball and walk away. They curl up in a ball to protect their soft tummy. You wouldn't think that a dinosaur looking creature would be soft to pet. Living on a diet of ants, these little creatures work diligently during the night to break termite mounds and eat them up. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most people come to Africa and never see a pangolin close up. Occasionally we see someone on the side of the road, holding one upside-down by the tail, trying to sell it as bush meat. Even though it's illegal, when you live in a country where people are living day by day, you can't blame them for trying to sell whatever they can find to make some money. Some Americans were visiting Monrovia and Chad had some interaction with them. They had seen someone with a strange animal who was trying to get them to take it. Immediately he knew it was a pangolin. He told them if they could get the animal, he knew of an animal rescue organization that he could take it to.</div>

Chad brought it home. We didn't think the pangolin would make it though the night. We coaxed it to drink some water. It didn't even curl-up in a ball or lay down. It just stopped moving. We left it and came back hours later to get it to drink again before we went to sleep. Not sure what we would find in the morning, we were thrilled to see it had moved and was now curled up. We continued to give it water to drink and Chad took it out for a "walk" to see if it would eat any bugs. We weren't really successful with that, but so happy that it lived for us to take it to the animal rescue organization. Turns out we didn't save just one pangolin because this little girl was pregnant! She's been released in the wild somewhere. We hope she is save with her little baby. It was an amazing experience to help save an animal and have the opportunity to observe a pangolin up close.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Built in 1960, the Ducor Hotel was the first international hotel in Liberia, and the only 5 star hotel to have been here. Located on the highest point in Monrovia, a bar on the roof provided a 360ยบ view of the city. The hotel closed in 1989 as the first civil war was beginning. Through the 10 years of the first civil war, the property was damaged, looted, and displaced people made their homes there. During the 2003 siege of Monrovia, Charles Taylor's army used it as a firing position because of the strategical view of the city. In 2007, squatters were removed from the property, but it still remains abandoned today. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Ducor is a short distance from where we live. Surrounded by a chain link fence and barbed wire with a few nonuniformed "guards" loitering inside it appears closed off, but a few dollars passed through the fence allows a quick entrance. Here are a few pictures from our explorations over Christmas.</div>

We arrived to a group of kids sitting outside of a low building. The kids ranged from toddlers to young adults. Apparently around 40 attend the school. Some are orphans, some have parents, and some have parents who have abandoned them. Luckily, American Sign Language (ASL) is used here, along with some English-based sign languages, so I could communicate with the kids (though it did end up being difficult because there were a lot of name signs, kids in general are difficult to understand (even in English!), and there were some local sign mixed in). As I went up and was introducing myself in ASL, I saw a number of jaws drop and eyes widen. Hands started flying. Who was this white girl who signed? Was she deaf?<br />
<br />

Mom, Dad, and Elena don't know much ASL, but they also introduced themselves, and I chatted with the kids until we went on a tour of the school. From what we saw, the kids had pretty much nothing but the clothes on their backs and a few blankets on their beds. They live at the school, so there was a room for the girls and one for the boys, both crammed with bunk beds. There was also a store room. We waited while the director unlocked it, only to see it was completely empty; we were all a little shocked. Next we saw the kitchen, which had a few pots for cooking, and a giant mortar and pestle for crushing pepper to season food.<br />

The second building held six classrooms with benches, tables, and blackboards. When the kids arrive at the orphanage, they usually have to be taught ASL, which can take 3 months to a year. Teaching ASL to these kids involves drawing pictures, using books, and of course, interaction with the other kids. After they learn ASL, they can begin learning other topics. Elena, Mom, and Dad wrote in the dirt to communicate with the kids a little bit, so they seemed to understand written English.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Next to the building with classrooms was the library, i.e. a few partially-built walls. Often in Liberia, when people have a little money, they start a project with no way to continue it, which is what happened here. Near the library there was a big water pump, though drinking water has to be bought in little plastic sacks.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After the tour, the director had the kids sign a song about God. A few of them sang along too. It was fun to see that little performance! Later, I asked the kids if they wanted gifts, and of course they were excited! We handed out the coloring books and crayons, soccer balls, bags of candy, and an armload of stuffed animals that we had brought along. The kids swarmed us eagerly for the gifts, and immediately started playing with their new toys with us. Some local hearing kids figured out something exciting was happening and joined as well.<br />
<br />
Overall, there were many basic needs there that were barely being met, and very little financial support for the school. But the kids seemed pretty happy and healthy, and it was so much fun to play with them!<br />

Liberia doesn't have the draw of safaris or wildlife parks. There are no leopards, elephants, lions, zebras, hyenas, giraffes, gorillas, gazelles, rhinoceros, water buffalos, wildebeests, or ostriches. Almost any animal that you think of, when thinking of Africa, is not here in Liberia. So we don't have safaris to go to, but what we do have is Monkey Island.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our journey began when the paved road ended and the ruts of a golden brown dirt road led the way into Marshall, a small town on the coast of Liberia. We had a bit of an idea of what we were going to do: find the boats then hopefully barter a price with someone willing to haul the Americans around for a few hours. Chad and Damon found a few men who led them off into the village. If a few strangers are hanging around, curious kids appear to see what treasures they may have. We had fun handing out some Twizzlers and showing them how to take the plastic off and chew the candy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxK9GIsFA-qQMHdYCiAPag42Rttw5rtwJRI5NjeCV0VbbnRmRBNwIvXw7PX4idSPwoa7nSRKy2KTY_izii8yX0ZHlWJqaUZqpN144xHt8aod1YsgWyPJX5nr-IJxcdx7WM6YWE9r67gvoQ/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxK9GIsFA-qQMHdYCiAPag42Rttw5rtwJRI5NjeCV0VbbnRmRBNwIvXw7PX4idSPwoa7nSRKy2KTY_izii8yX0ZHlWJqaUZqpN144xHt8aod1YsgWyPJX5nr-IJxcdx7WM6YWE9r67gvoQ/s640/2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chad and Damon returned, happy with the price and happy to have found guides for the trip. Marshall, a fishing town, is lined with dug-out canoes and colorful fishing boats. We stepped into the water of the lagoon where the Farmington River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The water was warm and crystal clear. We climbed into the boat, trying desperately to keep our balance and not tip the whole thing over. Fishing nets filled the spaces between seats. We started by sitting single file, but when the whole boat listed to the side and my knuckles, which were gripped tight to the side, felt the coolness of the water I screeched. This completely surprised the two men positioned at each end of the boat, one a guide and the other the driver. Accustomed to the sway and rocking of the boat and knowing it's boundaries, they had no thought in the world that we would tip over. But because they didn't want to listen to the screeches of a woman for the next bit, they had Chad and Damon stand to help steady the boat as it floated forward. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ride to the island was peaceful and beautiful. The village behind us with a few huts sprinkled along the shore, disappeared into the past. We crossed the mouth of the river on one side with jungle stretching on the other. A tree in the distance, stood taller than anything around and spread its branches in the sky. For some reason, this tree spoke Africa to me. We were alone now. Five Fabers, two guides and a boat. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
An interesting fact about Monkey Island; there aren't any monkeys on this island. Seriously. I have no idea how the island got its name. There are chimpanzees on this island. And there's not just one island, but rather 4 in this group that have these chimps living on them. The story of these chimps is very similar to that of Liberia. It's sad and broken and limping along with no solution in site. In 1974, chimps were taken from the northern, mountainous areas of Liberia and brought to the Liberian Institute of Biomedical Research, a testing facility partnered with the New York Blood Center to conduct medical testing. Over 100 chimps were injected with infectious diseases. Once a chimp tested positive, it was taken to Monkey Island for follow-up testing. Because chimps don't swim, the island became a natural refuge for the animals. Testing continued through 2005 until it was proven that the testing was cruel to the animals. It has been said that the testing done here led to vaccinations for hepatitis B and screening for hepatitis C - two diseases than have affected millions of people throughout the world. The researchers continued to feed and water the chimps on the islands until the height of the ebola crisis in 2014. Then the chimps began to starve. There also isn't a natural fresh water source on the islands, so in dry season they must be given water as well. In 2015 the Humane Society took over care for the animals. Today locals are paid to feed and water the chimps on a regular basis. I've heard rumors that the chimps were sterilized or that the food they are given has birth control in it. Our guide disagreed saying that babies are still being born, increasing the population. Today there are around 70 chimps throughout the islands. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our boat pulled up to a metal stand, located about 30' offshore. A large sign stated "Second Chance Chimpanzee Refugee; Humane Society; Danger. Our guides knew how close they could get without being harmed by the chimps. Chad, Damon and Elena jumped out of the boat and onto the stand to watch the chimps as they rocked back and forth on their knuckles and shook their heads. They moved around a bit and began to settle, although one continued to shake his head reminding me of a bobble head toy. We stared at one another, neither party willing to move. Eventually the dominate chimp decided he would rather look down on us to assess the danger so he climbed up into a tree. It was fascinating watching these animals in the wild.</div>

Back in Marshall we took time to walk around, visit and hang-out with the kids. Before leaving we wanted to get a photo of our entire family with the kids. We asked one of the men we had been talking to if he would take a picture. Elena showed him where to look and how to press the button. We got the kids posed and waited while three men examined the camera, discussed and eventually appeared to take a photo. When we got home we had a good laugh at the two photos they took. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We had the opportunity to join one of our Marines, disguised as Santa, at a local orphanage this week. On Saturday several of us gathered at the Marine house and wrapped all the gifts that staff at the embassy had donated. Everything from toys, to clothes, to games, to soccer balls was given for the kids. It was great to get out and enjoy giving to the kids. We've been living in a bubble, trying to find ways to connect with and give to the community, but the organizations here are rather closed to help. This was a good open door for us to make some connections and meet some kids. Although it was hot and Santa was melting quickly, he had a blast with the kids as well as in the car with the window down, waving to all the people on the street. We look forward to our next visit with these kids.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm taking a bit of time off of work this Christmas to enjoy time with the kids while they're visiting. These lazy days allow me time to just sit and observe life here in Monrovia. Maddie and I were sitting at the front window one morning, enjoying our breakfast while gazing out on the ocean. I noticed a white ring of something floating in the water. Was it foam churned up in the current? I shifted in my chair and leaned in closer to get a better look around the palm trees swaying in the light breeze. A colorful boat bobbed off shore circled by a ring of buoys.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Brightly painted fishing boats float past our house several times each day. Often several pass my window in a short period of time headed out to fish or back into port with their catch. The boats we see go in and out of West Point, a peninsula located in the north east area of Monrovia which is the most densely populated slum area here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
There are two types of boats that pass by, dug out canoes paddled by one or two people which sometimes have a white, square sail and these larger boats powered by a motor. My understanding is that these colorful boats have come from Ghana. I don't know why these fishermen decided to resettle here in Liberia, but they fill every port. The boats often have a Bible verse reference painted on the side. The Liberian flag as well as laundry strung down the middle, flutters in the breeze and a white cross was mounted front and center in this boat.</div>

<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">Up to this point I'd only seen the boats coming or going, so I was excited to watch the men gather their net. We stood along the edge of our compound for an hour or so, watching the circle slowly constrict with each pull of the net into the boat. The sun burned down on our shoulders and sweat tricked down our backs. I can't imagine how hot it must be in the thick of day out on the boats yet a small breeze was coming off the sea.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">We stayed until the net was fully collected into the boat. I was curious to see how many fish they pulled in. Watching through my telephoto lens, I was surprised to see only a few fish. It was disappointing, I was hoping to see the men straining to empty their net into the boat and head home with a full load.</span></div>

Beginning in 1989, the first civil war divided the country killing 250,000 people. Some key players in the war were Charles Taylor and Prince Johnson, each leading rebel groups. Charles Taylor was part of the Doe government, but left when he was accused of embezzlement. He went to the Ivory Coast where he trained groups of rebel soldiers who felt they were oppressed under Doe. Johnson won control of Monrovia but there were still several years of fighting and instability. In 1997 elections were held and Charles Taylor became the president. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Peace didn't last long and in 1999 rebels once again emerged with fighting, looting and taking over Monrovia. The second civil war ended in 2003.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Remember the movie <i>Blood Diamonds</i> with Leonardo DiCaprio? This story took place in neighboring Sierra Leone under Charles Taylor's rule to fund his war. Did you read the book <i>A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier</i>? This is the accounting of children who were captured, given drugs and forced into killing in - you guessed it - the same conflict with Charles Taylor leading it all. I had seen the movie and read the book years ago. I never connected it all with Liberia as the center of the conflict. Of course I barley knew what Liberia was back then. But if you're acquainted with either of these pieces, then you have a small understanding of what happened in Liberia. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The wars have been over for 15 years, but the effects remain. The city of Monrovia is littered with the carcasses of blown-out buildings that have never been repaired or torn down. They have become part of the city scape. There is a generation of people now in their prime years with an education gap which is having a large effect on the ability of the country to move forward. Infrastructure is non-existent so there is no road to connect the east to the west side of Liberia making moving goods, such as crops, impossible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The country was trying to piece itself back together when Ebola struck in 2014-2016. Over 4,800 people died in Liberia. Again, this drained the country of any resources they had and another education gap occurred.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
But all of this is in the past, right? Sadly, working in the embassy, these two events are referred to over and over again. They seem to be a road block that has stopped all movement forward in the country. Day by day, life goes on for the people but there is little to no improvement for society. The people are lacking decent roads, electricity, sewage systems and water - the essentials to life.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In addition to the difficult of the past, there seems to be other constant crisis distracting progress. I've been here for three months now and in that time there seems to be a crisis each month. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In September $104 million newly printed <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/20/world/africa/liberia-missing-currency.html">Liberian Dollars went missing</a>. That's $60 million USD. Seems like a lot of cash to loose. It was newly printed money that was being imported through the port and airport and it's all gone - or is it? No one seems to know. It's chaos and they want America to fix this problem. There was some hubbub and news, but then it's sort of fizzled up and gone away with no-one knowing where this money is.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In October the government felt that it was having a difficult time collecting taxes from its people so they had a brilliant idea to <a href="https://allafrica.com/stories/201810230709.html">raise taxes on gas</a>. Gas is something that everyone needs. So with the new taxes the gas companies decided that they were not able to sell their product at the new high price that the government was demanding so they limited their supply. They had the gas already imported but were not releasing it for sale to the public. It was sort of a face down to see who would win. So what was the impact? Gas stations seemed to dole out their limited supply in the morning and evening during rush hours. Long lines of cars waiting to get gas blocked up the roads while people were commuting to and from work. This caused the citizens additional hours in commute times. Gas stations also stopped allowing people to fill 1 liter bottles at the pump. This caused a crisis in a business where individuals go places where there aren't gas stations nearby and re-sell the gas at a bit of a mark-up. So boom, all those people who are barely surviving anyway were out of work. This was another crisis that was in the news for a few weeks but then society sort of shifted around the dysfunction and life goes on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
That's how it is here in Liberia. Things are corrupt and broken but there is no power for change. It all feels rather dire. I don't sense hope in the people, rather just acceptance. As an outsider I look in, wondering what I could do that would help. It's all so overwhelming. Even the people who try to help seem to run into the problems with the corruption. More Than Me, a charity run group of schools for young girls, came into the news in October when <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45869800">a leader in the organization was accused of raping many of the girls</a>. It's sad because it's a great organization that is changing the lives of some girls here in Liberia. Yet now there is suspicion and doubt of the help of foreigners. It's one more thing crippling this country.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
A friend in Taiwan said to me "Liberia is one of those countries that I'm always rooting for but they just can't seem to get it together." It's hard to have hope when the outsiders around you don't have any. These are just my own thoughts and opinions on what I've seen around me these past few months. I don't understand all the politics and I really don't understand the root of all the problems. I just thought I'd share a few of the things I've pick-up on along the way.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Clothing here in West Africa is vibrant and colorful in stark contrast to the orange earth tones of the street and buildings. Both men and women have their clothes made out of these colorful fabrics. Blouses, skirts, dresses and even head wraps adorn the women and the men wear shirts and sometimes matching pants out of lappa. I've noticed that you don't mix lappas, you pick one pattern and create an outfit with ruffles and frills all out of the same busy pattern. And it works. It's beautiful and fun. On a given day, driving or walking down the street, I would say about 50% of the people are wearing traditional cloth. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Lappa is not the name of the fabric, rather it's the name of the measurement. One lappa is 2 meters of the colorful cloth. It's typically sold as 3 lappas for $10 USD. Needless to say, you can see that shopping for lappa is going to be an addiction for me! Shops tend to sell only lappa - no thread or other sewing supplies. I've already had a skirt made and sewed curtains for my kitchen. On one window shopping trip I bought a lappa that I hadn't seen before and really liked. Of course at church on Sunday a little boy was wearing a full shorts outfit out of that exact same fabric!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The patterns on the fabric are interesting as well. Everything from flowers, bird, geometric patterns and swirls to cell phones, usb adapters and cameras are used. I've even seen a fertility pattern with embryos and eggs. I might just have to get some of that one for memories sake!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Lappa will definitely be my excuse to go wander the market on a Sat. morning.</div>

Well not in the Faber household! Due to limited food choices and high food costs here in Liberia, we are allowed a consumables shipment consisting of 2,500# of stuff. It sounds wonderful and like a little bit of Heaven, but the reality of putting together a consumables shipment was an exhausting challenge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I began the process on Jan. 1 with sticky notes all over the house. Every time someone changed a roll of toilet paper they put a slash. New bag of flour? Slash. New container of laundry soap? Slash. Do you know how much stuff you go through in two years? I certainly don't and it added a bit of a challenge going from a five person household to just the two of us in a few short years. That change turned all my shopping and cooking expertise upside down. By May I was able to get some scientific estimates on what we used and how much we would need for the two years.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I began my shopping in Taipei. I checked on the weight of our household shipment when we arrived three years earlier, factored in the pieces we had bought and deduced that I had about 1,500# of extra weight that I could use. I made several trips to Costco in Taipei and bought all the toilet paper, laundry soap and other non-food items that I could. My household goods shipment was underweight by 50#. I patted myself on the back for this extreme success. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Back home I tried to find a balance between shopping and enjoying the home leave time with my friends and family. Not an easy thing to do when your running to a different store with an extensive list between every visit because you're on the right side of town or only 5 minutes out of the way. Our focus was liquids because we can't have them mailed to us. Some amazing friends let us continually drop loads of food off in their garage for a month. We all watched the pile grow and made bets on what the weight was the day the movers came to pack it all up. Just before we left America our food was loaded on a truck to be shipped to Monrovia.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdP-rPM_qUJQXgcesHROEDmMYLcPOIpbEg26bAc77huOYGLWaG071D0GLfbSoarb2EYM-HkssarpGkQjel0EuUJcQzlNdnObj-sMl_5usnzYCY1k7B83mdS0pNtsr-INgymomW2lj8PGjP/s1600/IMG_0445.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdP-rPM_qUJQXgcesHROEDmMYLcPOIpbEg26bAc77huOYGLWaG071D0GLfbSoarb2EYM-HkssarpGkQjel0EuUJcQzlNdnObj-sMl_5usnzYCY1k7B83mdS0pNtsr-INgymomW2lj8PGjP/s320/IMG_0445.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our consumables shipment arrived about 6 weeks after I arrived in Africa. Until it came I had moments of complete melt-down where the only solution was to once again go get an overpriced pizza at the hotel down the street. Cooking was a challenge. I won't go into the miserable details, because well, after all, we didn't starve to death. Life is happier now that I can make our comfort foods or at least foods that are familiar to us and that we enjoy!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm trying to wrap my mind around some of the mindsets here in Liberia. Life is looked at differently and what may seem completely non-understandable and outrageous makes perfect sense to people here. One of those issues is boundaries. For example, this morning I was sitting on the back porch at 6:30 a.m. eating breakfast and reading my Bible. I was really enjoying the quiet as the sun was coming up. The dog was wandering around the walled in backyard. I heard a rattle and suddenly some strange man was standing there. There I was, thinking I was in my private space and a random man was there. I was shocked speechless. He started talking about how the plants looked watered and good. I had wondered where those plants had come from and now I knew. I heard there was a gardener who had a side business helping people with plants for their houses. I had made it clear that we didn't want help with the plants because the yard is all torn-up right now for construction, but here he was wandering around my backyard in the early morning. I really don't think that to him there was any boundary he crossed when he opened the gate and walked in without permission. Living seems to be much more community oriented here.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let me give you a little glimpse about where I live. We're on the Old Embassy Compound which basically means that this is a little American Community with housing and some recreational spaces. There's a big wall around the compound with barbed wire on top. To enter the compound you have to come in through one of the gates where you must show your badge to prove you are an embassy employee. So people can't wander in off the street onto the compound. It's a busy place during the day because there are several major construction projects going on as well as the normal maintenance, so there's always some local staff around.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But this next story is one I still haven't been able to rationalize or wrap my mind around. Because I'm at work all day, I'm not really aware of the business going on at the compound. We get in our 40 hours of work by 1:00 on Friday so we have the afternoon free. I had noticed a lot of people wandering around the side of our house on Friday afternoons, then I was home one day to take care of a few things and was really contentious of all the people lingering around my yard. On my way back to work, I noticed the door to the crawl space under our house was ajar. I cautiously took a peek inside and couldn't believe what I saw. A full break room had been set up, complete with a water cooler and microwave wired into the house's electrical. I was flabbergasted. There's no way to really explain the mental battle of how to grasp and feel comfortable with people hanging out under my living space. That night I noticed lights on under the house. Because I'm an absolute 'fraidy cat, I got a friend to check things out for me the next day. She claimed that there were no squatters living in there. I hope not! A few conversations with the right people at work got the situation quickly under control. By Monday afternoon the crawl space was completely empty and swept out. I've noticed that a table has crept back in but right now I'm turning a blind eye to the squatters. I'll give it a bit of time then we can check it out again.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Every time we move to a new country we have to get used to new money and new exchange rates. It's a bit of a challenge at first, but after awhile you sort of know that something priced 30NT in Taiwan is only $1.00. Liberia has simplified things and made them more complicated all at once.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Where to begin... One US dollar is equal to about 150 Liberian dollars. That's a crazy big multiplication problem every time I want to buy something! I exchanged a $20 bill and got the wad of cash above. I tried to shove it in my purse and not make a display out of counting the money. I then stopped at a table to buy a head of garlic and had to rummage through my money to find a 10. It was a lot to manage!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here's where things get sort of crazy. Liberia uses two currencies: The US Dollar <b>and</b> the Liberian Dollar. I'm starting to get the hang of where I use what. If I go to an actual grocery store the prices will be in US dollars and I pay in US dollars. If I go to the street market the prices will be in Liberian dollars and I pay in Liberian dollars. But they don't use any coins here so if I go to the grocery store and my bill comes to $50.75 and I give them $60 US dollars then they will give me $8.00 US and 38 Taiwan dollars in change.<br />
<br />
This brought up the question of where do the US dollars come from? Does Liberia buy them from the US Treasury? I asked around a bit and from what I gather from the people who should know is that they rely on money being brought into the country. I came off the plane with a suitcase full of dollars so now they have come into circulation here. From the looks of the money, none ever get taken out of circulation. There's no way they could do that because there's nothing backing that money. So I use my overly worn, dirty, floppy dollars here that would never be used back home. I might begin looking at dates on the money and see what the oldest one I can find is.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The conveniences in life have pretty much remained the same for me most places I go. I may have dealt with one or two of these things before but never all at once. We don't think about all the little things that we have in America that make life just a touch easier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD6thsI8K2EPTqsbSxbUXNxJ3hdmpOTwrr2saMyNN4K1ByZdLPzUu6CbhHaSirBi26vR8nLJSE0Pp45fRO22g2orYXwzkFJYSVxc1sjS74BJC2mIcykOZGs8S_Td7t7SBdVGXR5v-OtFyu/s1600/IMG_0366.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD6thsI8K2EPTqsbSxbUXNxJ3hdmpOTwrr2saMyNN4K1ByZdLPzUu6CbhHaSirBi26vR8nLJSE0Pp45fRO22g2orYXwzkFJYSVxc1sjS74BJC2mIcykOZGs8S_Td7t7SBdVGXR5v-OtFyu/s320/IMG_0366.JPG" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
No dishwasher. This completely threw me for a loop. I honestly had expected to have a dishwasher (besides my own two hands). No one mentioned to me that there wouldn't be one so don't buy dishwasher soap for your consumables shipment. Yeah, I have two years worth coming with me. What else can you do with it?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While we're looking at the sink I'll mention that no one else in the world has a garbage disposal. They are the most convenient thing but only found in America (maybe Canada??). It is gross trying to catch all the food stuff in a strainer or mesh basket but I was a bit pampered with always having water just simply whisk food scraps away with the flip of a switch. In Taipei they had even invented disposable plastic netted baggie things to put in your drain so you could just throw the whole thing out. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9auHL7nulxix2q5CjQ8wPfoLb1IlL_8iLsAeDUIGGxdNq4tdyMwN3ylcGTrueWR9hpuWXc_SMcS4ZxJm4IOCEYUtxk7fo6ABldckm8ZNQTsc2SeexB4E124mJkdaV3jQ9UyWyJXYbM0gP/s1600/IMG_0410.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9auHL7nulxix2q5CjQ8wPfoLb1IlL_8iLsAeDUIGGxdNq4tdyMwN3ylcGTrueWR9hpuWXc_SMcS4ZxJm4IOCEYUtxk7fo6ABldckm8ZNQTsc2SeexB4E124mJkdaV3jQ9UyWyJXYbM0gP/s320/IMG_0410.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Monrovia does not have city water. The women go daily to a place (I'll learn more about this later and pass it on.), collect water for the day and carry it on their heads to their homes. I've learned that buildings like ours have a tank that is filled regularly from a large truck that comes by. Although they keep the tank and lines clean, we aren't supposed to drink the water from the tap. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWdrOIc_jelvBOf8svcGQv2vlz6BwaiqoFcsexY716DK8NUFRoC7tGwJauuItn62i4JeXoRGxcpkY1sN5Qf1Ove4Foy6uMHqz7ljbGaj6nqIiDRENrBJvkWwh8t0J5idbPdFlZQkvBVuOi/s1600/IMG_0367.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWdrOIc_jelvBOf8svcGQv2vlz6BwaiqoFcsexY716DK8NUFRoC7tGwJauuItn62i4JeXoRGxcpkY1sN5Qf1Ove4Foy6uMHqz7ljbGaj6nqIiDRENrBJvkWwh8t0J5idbPdFlZQkvBVuOi/s320/IMG_0367.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For our clean water supply we have a water distiller on the counter that continually fills up with water (and leaks on the counter) and somehow takes the bad stuff out. We drink it, clean fruits and veggies with it and cook with it. I suppose if I boiled the tap water long enough I could cook with it, but it's easier to just get it from the distiller.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT1tjXMA5TXLhlHkcz2QC1PXL8cOYuKAsxoCxBkrq9WPNBwymcCENlPwe8gI3EgH1wu0BT6dulJsdtpPD5biWpTxf9Sc52lpqykazQYMlNPHfYwsnWzJHKelmBJHW-YF5te5FoFQYicn4k/s1600/IMG_0370.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT1tjXMA5TXLhlHkcz2QC1PXL8cOYuKAsxoCxBkrq9WPNBwymcCENlPwe8gI3EgH1wu0BT6dulJsdtpPD5biWpTxf9Sc52lpqykazQYMlNPHfYwsnWzJHKelmBJHW-YF5te5FoFQYicn4k/s320/IMG_0370.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While we're talking about not drinking the water, that means we can't brush our teeth with the water either. So we have a bottle of the distilled water by the sink along with a cup. When our stuff comes I have some great little pitchers that will be perfect for this use! It's hard to change habits at this point in life. I've caught myself several times bending over to rinse my mouth from the tap. </div>

We have 220v here so we use have to have a transformer to plug our electrical items into. We had them in Moscow as well. I found it surprising that Bogota and Taipei used the same standard electrical outlets that we have in America. It made life so much easier to not have wires and electrical strips running everywhere. Things that turn often don't do too well on transformers. Fingers crossed that we don't loose too many appliances this tour!</div>

Due to the high humidity in Monrovia we've been issued 4 dehumidifiers. We had them in Taipei as well, but our apartment must have been well built because I gave up using them all together. They didn't collect enough water to justify the electrical usage. On the other hand, we are emptying these buckets every single day.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Most electricity here is run from generators. There is some sort of city electricity that powers the street lamps, but I'm not sure if it's consistent or why we aren't tied into it. Each large building has a large generator (think semi truck container size) that powers it. As far as I can tell one week in, the electricity is consistent. There are many problems with this type of system including the cost to run them and the noise they produce. When I go out on the balcony all I can hear is the generators running. I'm sure it will turn into background noise at some point in time, but right now they are overwhelmingly loud. Another issue is at around 5:00 pm and sometime in the morning they switch from one generator to another so the power goes off for a minute. It doesn't affect most things that are plugged in because they just pop back on. Clocks on appliances are useless unless you want to reset them two times every day. I learned all this the hard way. I put a roast in the oven, went to exercise and do a few things expecting the house to smell delicious when I walked in. I was surprised to see the oven off and the roast not cooked at all. So much for dinner that night!</div>

After a week of living here these things are becoming normal. In a month I won't even think about them, but at first it's a bit overwhelming to realize that all of these conveniences and more are things that I don't realize how easy I've had it.</div>

The journey from Grand Rapids to Monrovia was a long one. Grand Rapids - New York - Brussels - Amsterdam - Freetown - and finally, Monrovia. I read books and binge watched movies on the Europe to Africa section. When I was tired of it all I tuned into the flight status channel. We were almost to the boarder of Spain and Morocco. Africa at last! I watched out the window as we crossed the Alboran Sea. The terrain change from green to brown as we flew over the Sahara Dessert, then back to the lush green jungles of the coastal countries of West Africa. Finally, I stepped off the plane into pitch darkness. There was a light rain. I was not surprised as we are in the midst of rainy season. The only light coming from the small building of the "airport." I was greeted by a woman holding a sign with my name. She could pretty much pick me out from the 20 people entering Liberia. She hustled me through immigration to the luggage room where my bags were already waiting for me. I was happy they had made the long journey successfully despite rerouting and tight connections.<br />
<br />
The drive from the airport into the city takes 1 1/2 hours. It was dark so I couldn't see too much. What I noticed were the street lamps providing the only light. I could see rough cement buildings with tin roofs but they didn't have any light. People congregated in the areas where the street lights shed their beams. Beyond that was pure darkness. Something that stuck out to me were the pool tables under awnings. I didn't expect that, it didn't fit into my picture of Africa.<br />
<br />
We pulled up to our apartment and tumbled into bed. The trip was exhausting, I was so glad to be in my new home.<br />

On the way back from China and Taiwan, we had a layover in San Francisco, so we stretched it out a few days. We had never visited before, but now finally understand why people love it.<br />

We stayed two days in Fishermanโs Wharf, which was a great location. Every morning we walked over to Boudinโa quite well-known bakery, famous for their sourdoughโfor breakfast. They did not disappoint! Along with eating the delicious sourdough, it is fun to watch it made through the window. At one point we saw them shape a giant crocodile out of dough, and later we came back and saw it all golden brown and baked.<br />

The first day we took the cable car down to Union Square. It felt like a scene from a movie as we hung off the side of the cable car and rolled up and down the steep streets. At Union Square, we stopped in a few stores, most notably, the Apple Store! I walked out with a new phone :) After shopping, we had an early dinner at Sears Fine Foods. I had heard about this restaurant before in all my reading of food-related things, and I thought it sounded so cool and old-timeyโbut didnโt realize there was one still around. I was so excited to find one at Union Square! Just like I had expected, it was old-fashioned and so cute. The food was absolutely delicious. After dinner, they gave each of us a token to play their antique slot machine. None of us won, but it was fun to pull the crank and cross our fingers! We rode the cable car back in the direction we had come from, and hopped off at Lombard Street, one of the curviest streets in San Francisco. Itโs amusing to watch the cars twist and turn painfully slow down the steep street. From there, we were exhausted, and headed back to the hotel for the night. That was definitely my favorite day.<br />

Our second day in California was the Fourth of July. We started out by going to see the sea lions at Pier 39, which we didnโt realize go south for the summer. We only saw two, and were a little disappointed. We then walked back to Fishermanโs Wharf to visit The Musรฉe Mรฉcanique. This was very entertaining! Elena and I knew what it was from Princess Diaries, and had fun playing all of the games from the movie. Surprise, surprise, the wrestling arm was much harder than I had expectedโฆI lost. From among the tons of antique arcade games, we tried out some pinball, racing games, and a photo booth. We left grinning. That afternoon we eagerly went to see The Incredibles 2, which was so good! Later that night, we headed out to watch fireworks from the beach near Fishermanโs Wharf. It was a great fireworks show, and so much fun with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.<br />

The next morning, we set out for the Redwoods. On the way, we did the last thing on our San Francisco bucket list: The Golden Gate Bridge. We drove across it, and on the other side, stopped to snap a few photos. A good way to start the day! We chose the scenicโand very curvyโroute up the coast of California to get to the Redwoods. We expected it to be a 5 hour trip, but 5 hours turned into 12. Sure, we stopped for lunch, dinner, and to drive through a 2,400 year old Redwood, but still, we were not pleased with that timing!<br />

Thursday we woke up early and headed out for the grove. It was amazing to be surrounded by so many ginormous, ancient trees. They were around when Jesus walked the earth! After walking the trail for awhile, we stepped into the bushes to go on an adventure. We walked up a river, climbing over rocks, under branches, and through bushes to reach a particularly tall tree. Incredible. Later, heading back, we were thankful that the highway route was actually only 5 hours. A few hours after arriving, in the wee hours of the morning, we said goodbye to San Francisco and jetted off to Washington, D.C.!<br />

Different than the red, square temples we were accustomed to in Taipei, the Temple of Heaven is round with blue and green detail. The layout of the buildings throughout the grounds symbolize the relationship between earth and heaven. The emperors came here to participate in ceremonies and prayer. Animal were sacrificed to the heavens on an alter within the circular temple. The grounds are a lovely place to spend an afternoon enjoying the shade.</div>

Adjacent to the Forbidden City, a hike up the central hill in Jingshan Park provided us with stunning views of the Forbidden city. Fortunately the pollution wasn't too bad the morning we visited. Throughout the day, we watched the smog roll in. </div>

Prior to visiting Tianamum Square, I watched the video from the 1989 student protests of the man who stood up against the tank. I was a jr. in high school at that time and sad to say, I don't remember this modern history at all. Today, people linger under umbrellas, snapping pictures and stand in lines for hours to file past the preserved body of Mao. The "Tianamum" or Gate of Heavenly Peace is a national symbol of China in the center of the city. Through the gate is the Forbidden City.</div>

The Forbidden City is one of the top things to see in Beijing. The former Imperial Palace of the Ming dynasty to the Qing dynasty consists of 980 buildings packed into 180 acres. It was hot and we were tired of crowds. It felt like more of the same architecture we've been looking at for the past three years. The Palace museum is located here, but in Taipei we had the National Palace Museum which housed all the Chinese artifacts that China sent there for protection during the war. I really believe we made it through in record time. We zig-zagged our way around the crowds, seeing the less visited areas.</div>

During Elena's Sr. year, we wanted to do a girls trip to China but found it was very difficult to get visas from Taiwan. Our attempts led to our passports being lost in the mail and many hours on the phone to get them back - without ever receiving the visas. Earlier this year, China instated a 144 hour transit visa allowing us to start in Taiwan, spend up to 144 in Beijing before continuing on to a third country. This was the perfect solution for us as we PCS'd out of Taiwan. I was honestly a bit nervous waiting in the very small line that this was not going to work and we would be stuck in the airport for six days. Fortunately, we only needed to fill out a simple form and show our departure tickets. They stamped everything multiple times and we were on our way to our adventures in China. </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The main thing we wanted to see in China was the Great Wall. It's really unfathomable to imagine. But I didn't want to just see the Great Wall with a million other tourists, I wanted to experience the Great Wall. To hike it for hours letting the greatness of it all sink in. We hired a guide who picked us up from our hotel bright and early and rode 3 hours to where the road ended. After walking thousands of stairs through the jungles of Taiwan, I didn't expect dirt paths and forests in China. (Silly, I know.) We hiked up hill for an hour before reaching the wall. We found over the two days that our guide was a bit funny with photos. He had a nice camera with him and would have us pose for every single photo. We would try to tell him that we just wanted a nice one of us standing in a certain spot, but no, there must be a pose of some sort. So we began the wall with a picture of us touching it.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The air was crystal clear for the two days we were hiking the wall. I've read news stories about the extreme pollution in China but a wind had come from the North blowing the pollution away. (Probably to Taiwan where they complain about the smog rolling in from China as a wall of filth polluting the island.) Lucky us because we had stunning views our entire hike. In fact, at one point we could even see the city of Beijing in the distance.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The wall is actually three walls built at different times in history. The Quin Wall, the Han Wall and the Ming Wall. Construction began in the 5th century BC to establish boarders between waring states. In 221 BC the First Emperor demolished the interior walls between unified states but kept the north and northwestern boundary walls and linked them together. Construction continued until 220 AD. These original walls have mostly been taken back by nature. When we talk about the Great Wall, we are referring to the most recent wall from the Ming Dynasty built from 1368-1644. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our hike the first day began along the Jiankou section then changed into the Mutianyu section. This was the oldest section we hiked. It has not been repaired or restored in any way. Our guide gave us a map of China showing the Great Wall. He then highlighted the sections we would hike. They looked like two small dashes on a very long line. The Great Wall is 8,851 kilometers long. (That's approx. 6,000 feet or the length of the US boarders between Mexico <u>and</u> Canada!) It really is hard to imagine the length of this wall and the amazing feat in building it until you have walked for hours on it snaking up and down and back up again. The non-restored sections are crumbling and overgrown with vegetation. We didn't talk too much as we were walking. I think we were all absorbing how ancient and desolate the structure we were walking on is. We encountered very few people that first day. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The construction of the wall is amazing. Our guide claimed that slave labor was not used in the construction, rather as part of your military service you built 3.3 meters of the wall during 2 years of service. Of course you didn't work alone. A company of 153 soldiers worked together to build 500 meters of wall. The rock was quarried near the wall. Each block weighs 2 tons and was moved with crowbars on rolling logs. The terra-cotta bricks, 24 lbs each, were made in the valleys and passed up the mountain hand to hand. As the wall moves up and down the mountains, the bricks follow the curve of the land rather than being horizontal. It begs the question of how did they get the bricks to stay in place while waiting for the mortar to dry? The Chinese were very ingenious by using sticky rice. This was the most expensive part of the building process. They ground and mixed the glutenous rice then immediately stuck a brick onto the wall. The rice mortar held like super glue and is still holding 500 years later. It's amazing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
By the end of the day we were wiped out. It was a lot of difficult climbing up and down the crumbling steps. Our guide took us to a restaurant where we enjoyed a traditional dinner of many foods we were already accustomed to. We drove for an hour or two to what had once been a small farming village where we stayed in an old home converted into a hotel. It was clean and quaint and had we not been exhausted we would have enjoyed walking along the river a bit.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Day 2 we awoke early to see the sun rise over the wall. The sun had just peaked out when we arrived. We found a quiet spot to enjoy the early morning rays. Tucked on one of the decks of a watchtower, we enjoyed the breakfast the hotel had sent along. We were rewarded with another beautiful day for walking. We had driven to the Jinshanling section of the wall. It was immediately clear that this was a much more used and repaired section. The wall dipped and fell creating long climbs up and then down again. My sore muscles screamed at me for not having better prepared for the trip. The long, even, flat sections that were filled with tourists but easy to walk. Gone was our quiet connection with the wall. Soon we were back in the van giving a last wave to the wall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Spending two days walking the wall was the highlight for each of us on this trip. We will always share the memories of the hours we spent walking, eating, and huffing and puffing together. (Well, maybe I'm the only one with huffing and puffing memories!)</div>

A hutong is simply a narrow street or alley. Beijing used to be divided into different neighborhoods consisting of hutongs. Most have been torn down, replace with tall apartment buildings. But there are a few left and we were able to stay in one during our time in the city. Tucked amidst the entrances to homes, a door off the alley took us to a little lobby. Beyond that there were a few rows of traditional style rooms. In the photos above, the girls are standing by the red door and wall of our room. We enjoyed being part of a typical neighborhood. Each morning we purchased our breakfast from the neighborhood fruit stand. We moved over when bicycles came and smiled at people walking the street. Typically common bathrooms are shared in the hutongs. Fortunately, we had a bathroom in our room! </div>

There are three important holidays in Taiwan - Chinese New Year, Tomb Sweeping Day, and Dragon Boat Festival. For three years I got to be part of the AIT women's Dragon Boat team. I think it's been my favorite activity that I've participated in during my international travels. It's one thing to be in a country and stand at the edge watching a local parade or festival. It's quite another thing to be a participant and to spend months in preparation. It's a feeling of belonging - of home. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">The first two years Elena and I woke up every Saturday morning and rode our bikes along the river to the practice site. For an hour we were on the water learning to bend, twist, and stroke together as a team. It looks easy from the shore, but even with three months of practice, we couldn't come close to the beauty that a year-around team has. It had been 25 years since I'd participated in a team sport. I'd forgotten the fun of working together, laughing and cheering one another on. I loved the dynamics we had in our boat - singing (thank you coach!), chatting and team mates yelling "Come on ladies, push harder!" There were stretches of peace when we just paddled to the beat of the drum. All the stress of work, lists of groceries that needed to be bought, emails that needed to be written all faded to the background as I bent and dipped my paddle into the water in rhythm with the drum. Just the team, the boat, and the river.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This year I was on my own for many of the practices. It was one of the unexpected dynamics of the empty nest. Not only do the kids have to learn to do things on their own, but I did too. It added so much to my Saturday mornings when both Maddie and Elena were able to join the team after they arrived home from school. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Race day is always a lot of fun. Friends come out to cheer us on. Nerves are high until we get into the boat, then you can feel a quiet focus come over the team. We paddle to the starting area, get in position and wait for the gun. Three hard strokes and 10 fast strokes get the heavy boat moving. Our drummer yells out when to paddle harder or faster. Every year we seemed to go a bit faster on race day until this year where it turned a bit frantic. The flag catcher leans over the dragon's head and grabs a flag as we cross the finish line. We gave it all we had and placed third in our heat by just a smidgen. The first two places go on to the next round. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm going to miss getting on the river every Saturday morning next year. I'll be cheering my team on through Facebook with warm memories of past races. Good luck ladies!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Memorial weekend - our last chance to enjoy the beauty of Taiwan before the big move rush began. There's an island off the south west coast of Taiwan that we had been wanting to visit. I'll be honest, we dragged our feet booking a visit because we don't speak Chinese and knew it could be a challenge to really enjoy ourselves with only charades. Fortunately, our friends joined us which made the whole adventure that much more fun!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Getting to the island is an adventure it itself. Our transportation included the mrt to the train station, the high speed rail to Kaohsiung, a 40 min. taxi ride to the coast, then a boat to the island. Once on the island, the means of transpiration is your feet or a moped. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thanks to some great recommendations we booked a hotel that was walking distance to town and the beach. The whole "theme hotel" is a very Taiwanese thing so we embraced the ship shape of our lodgings knowing that at least we had a good landmark to charade to someone should we get lost. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The appeal of this adventure was to swim with the sea turtles. There was a little beachy area by the boat docks and our hotel. We didn't know exactly where the best spot to see the turtles would be, so we started there. There is a difference in the way Asians and Westerners travel and enjoy the world. The right hand side of the beach was full of groups of tourists. The were wearing long water suits, life jacket, mask and a snorkel. The proceeded into the water up to their knees holding on to a rope with a guide at the front and another at the back. Most groups didn't go any further. The just laid there in waist deep water looking at the broken coral and maybe a turtle or two. Some groups proceeded in chain fashion to the right for a decent distance, around some rocks and up some steps to the safety of dry ground. That is the Asian experience that we opted not to do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9jrJ5Qo3Ak2ndRsBcWD6_CAGelci32Yfz8KfydIaaZxQeZdXPYYFGQ6MRzUP2Qj81ys53Xf9gSgPCcz9-vpcZ3v5zZLKMkiKuxHoDI5Y-ByHMw0kk6u_PaBtNTyULjJdZW0pMje7vPBix/s1600/IMG_3477.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9jrJ5Qo3Ak2ndRsBcWD6_CAGelci32Yfz8KfydIaaZxQeZdXPYYFGQ6MRzUP2Qj81ys53Xf9gSgPCcz9-vpcZ3v5zZLKMkiKuxHoDI5Y-ByHMw0kk6u_PaBtNTyULjJdZW0pMje7vPBix/s640/IMG_3477.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We came equipped with our own masks. We looked like aliens, but I have to say these masks are amazing. They don't fog up, you have this great, wide view and the snorkel doesn't let water in. Our views were crystal clear. We headed out into the ocean which we had to ourselves. We spent hours just floating, gazing at the turtles. Some were huge and ancient. They slowly pulled and chomped on sea weed with no other care as to what the day may bring. Their shells were thick and covered in allege. Others were younger, smaller and more colorful. The swam through the deep waters with gentle grace.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We did the 45 min. drive around the island. While trying to find a beach on the map, we stumbled across a small abandoned marina. We walked around to the coral and once again had the ocean to ourselves. What a hidden gem! We put our faces in the water and pushed off. It was some of the most beautiful and undisturbed coral I've ever seen. Small tropical fish darted in and out of their hidey-holes. Brilliant coral colorfully created a dazzling world under the protection of the sea.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I wish it hadn't taken us so long to visit Xiao Liuqiu Island. It's the sort of place you can return to again and again.</div>

This was my third year competing on the AIT women's Dragon Boat Team. Participating on this team has been one of the highlights of my time in Taiwan. I love starting my Saturday in a boat. We paddle together, working to become as one unit. The peace of a new morning on the water takes the cares of the week and puts them in perspective.</div>

This is the first year our team was asked to participate in the Eye Dotting Ceremony a few weeks before the race. We had enough willing members to create a mixed team and the race fell late enough in the season that Maddie and Elena were able to be on the team this year. We met the team at a local temple and hung around watching and waiting to get in our boat. Nobody really knew what was going on. The event began with a celebration of drums, a dragon dance and of course, lots of firecrackers. The scent of incense drifted down from the upper level of the temple where offerings were made to gods. Then we followed a big parade down to the docks where the ceremony was to take place.</div>

I was a bit surprised to see all the boats lined up on dry ground. Next to each boat stood a nice looking couple with a sign declaring which team would be in each boat. Water was sprinkled on each boat, then the dot was painted in the center of each eye. This awakens the dragon and gives hi good favor towards you. Each team captain then dotted the eyes of their boat.</div>

Part of the event (the reason I had come) was a good long row from the eye dotting site to the race site. Our boat was closest to the water, so the first to go in. On one hand this was good because we had never lifted one of these extremely heavy boats as a team and carried it together. On the other hand, we had no clue what we were doing so there was a lot of confusion and yelling at us in Chinese. It would have been helpful to see how this was actually supposed to happen. Eventually, without a plan to follow, we all needed up in the boat and settled in for our long row up the river.</div>

Who doesn't love a royal wedding? With headlines as they are today - all gloom and doom - it's nice to step into a bit of the fairytale princess world, even if just for an evening. My friend and I had been discussing for months how we were going to watch Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wed.</div>

We were delighted when the British Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan scheduled a royal party to view the event live. One of our big challenges is how to watch events live. The Olympics become a medal winning event just in figuring out how to watch NBC coverage with a VPN in the correct time zone. It's exhausting sorting it all out. So this opportunity allowed us to simply anticipate. It was great fun following news stories leading up to the wedding. How do they pick the flowers? Who makes the dress? What are the customs and traditions with such an event? It gave us weeks of conversation topics.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We wore cocktail dresses in patriotic colors and fascinators on our heads. Every detail had been taken care of with royal pride. We had such fun, I can't wait until the next royal wedding, but I'll have to wait for the next generation to grow up. In the meantime, royal babies are just as fun to follow.</div>
